The government has declared Friday, July 3, 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Republic Day celebrations.
A statement issued by the Ministry for the Interior said Republic Day, which is a statutory public holiday in Ghana, falls on Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
However, in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, President John Dramani Mahama has issued an Executive Instrument (E.I.) declaring Friday, July 3, 2026, as the day to be observed as a public holiday throughout the country.
The Ministry explained that the decision was taken in view of the fact that the official Republic Day date falls in the middle of the week.
As a result, all public institutions, private organizations, and the general public are expected to observe Friday, July 3, as a public holiday.
Republic Day commemorates Ghana’s transition to a republic on July 1, 1960, when the country attained full republican status under the leadership of the country’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak.
The Ministry urged the public to take note of the change and observe the day accordingly.
