Voting in the Ayawaso East by-election has officially ended, and election officials have begun counting ballots to determine the new Member of Parliament for the constituency.
The by-election was held following the death of the area’s former MP, Mahama Naser Toure, who passed away after a brief illness at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
A total of five candidates contested the seat, including representatives from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), as well as two independent candidates.
Despite extensive preparations by the Electoral Commission and the deployment of security personnel to maintain order, voter turnout was noticeably low, with just over 40,000 of the constituency’s registered voters participating.
Election officials and political stakeholders are now closely monitoring the counting process, which is expected to conclude later today, with the winner set to fill the parliamentary vacancy in Ayawaso East.
