The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has invited Deputy Minority Leader and Asokwa MP Patricia Appiagyei to assist with a preliminary investigation into claims surrounding GH¢70,000 allegedly allocated to her as an advance in connection with parliamentary vetting.
The invitation follows the circulation of a purported memorandum attributed to Mrs. Appiagyei and addressed to Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, in which she allegedly stated that she had returned the money from the Majority Chief Whip.
In a public notice on Friday, September 4, 2026, the OSP said it had commenced preliminary investigations to establish the authenticity of the document, the source of the funds and their intended purpose.
“Given the constitutional importance of the Appointments Committee of Parliament and the need to safeguard the integrity of the vetting process,” the OSP said it considered it necessary to investigate the claims.
The anti-graft agency said the document raised concerns because Ms Appiagyei allegedly cast doubt on the source of the funds and suggested that they had “the hallmarks of extortion of the nominees.”
“To this effect, the OSP has dispatched a communication inviting Hon. Patricia Appiagyei to attend the OSP and assist it with the preliminary investigation,” the statement said.
The OSP did not state that Ms Appiagyei had been accused of extortion, but said the investigation would establish the veracity of the document and the circumstances surrounding the funds.
The development follows Mrs. Appiagyei’s decision to return the advance amid controversy over the vetting of nominees before Parliament’s Appointments Committee.
She had said she did not want to derive any financial benefit from the process, particularly the vetting of three Supreme Court nominees whose vetting the Minority Caucus had protested and declined to participate in.
The nominees are Justice Sophia Rosetta Oduokuwa Bernasko Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and Justice Anthony Forson Jr.
The OSP said the investigation forms part of a broader effort to examine allegations of extortion involving Members of Parliament.
