An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced TikTok content creator Camilla Alhassan to one year in prison after she pleaded guilty to charges of offensive conduct and publication of false news relating to videos she shared on social media about President John Dramani Mahama.
The 43-year-old was convicted on Thursday, July 16, following allegations that she made false claims in a series of TikTok videos accusing the President of engaging in ritual practices involving 32 cows to secure victory in the 2024 general election.
Prosecutors told the court that the claims were made without evidence and were presented as facts, despite having no basis.
The court imposed the sentence after Ms. Alhassan admitted to the charges brought against her.
She had earlier been remanded into lawful custody after the court directed that a pregnancy test be conducted before sentencing.
According to the prosecution, the charges arose from videos posted between late June and early July, in which the accused alleged that President Mahama performed rituals to obtain political power.
The prosecution further stated that she claimed the government’s distribution of sanitary pads to victims of the June 29 floods was intended to conceal the alleged rituals, assertions investigators described as false and unsubstantiated.
The court’s decision followed arguments from both sides after the accused accepted responsibility for the charges.
