The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has assured that government is taking steps to prevent financial concerns from distracting the national team as they prepare for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup.
His comments come ahead of Ghana’s Round of 32 fixture against Colombia, as the team reaches the knockout phase for the first time since 2010.
The Ghana national football team progressed from the group stage following a mixed performance that included a win over Panama, a draw against England and a defeat to Croatia.
Speaking on Sporty FM, the Minister said government had fulfilled its core obligations to the team and was working to ensure players remain fully focused as they pursue further progress in the tournament.
He also revealed that a qualification bonus package is being prepared for the squad, although it has not yet been formally presented.
“The Black Stars are very highly motivated. Government has done its bit,” he said.
“We have a qualification bonus for the next stage to give them. We’ve not offered that yet, but it’s being worked on. I don’t want anything financial to derail them,” he added.
Should Ghana advance, they are expected to face either Algeria or Switzerland in the Round of 16.
The team is scheduled to relocate to Kansas City on Wednesday as preparations intensify for their knockout match set for Saturday
