The National House of Chiefs has called on the government to implement a permanent and practical solution to Ghana’s recurring flooding, following the devastating 48-hour downpour that claimed at least 12 lives and displaced thousands of people.
The recent floods affected parts of Accra, Tema and several other communities, resulting in widespread destruction, loss of lives, and damage to homes and property.
The disaster also prompted a large-scale rescue operation involving the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service.
Addressing members at a meeting of the National House of Chiefs in Kumasi, the President of the House, Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II, extended condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
He expressed concern over the persistent nature of flooding in the country, stressing that the recurring disasters require urgent and proactive action from government.
Ogyeahoho Yaw Gyebi II urged authorities to move beyond emergency responses and adopt comprehensive preventive measures to address the root causes of flooding and safeguard lives and property.
The National House of Chiefs said a long-term strategy is essential to reducing the impact of future floods and protecting communities vulnerable to the effects of heavy rainfall
