Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament marched to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) headquarters over the detention for Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has been held in custody since Tuesday.
Led by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the MPs gathered at Parliament before proceeding along major streets to EOCO’s Accra office, where they blocked the entrance and held hands, chanting solidarity songs to demand Wontumi’s release.
The protest comes after Chairman Wontumi failed to meet the bail conditions set by EOCO, which included a GH¢50 million bail bond with two sureties.
Despite the bail being granted, Wontumi spent a night in detention for not fulfilling these conditions.
The march was described by the Minority as not just an act of support but a protest against what they perceive as harsh and unfair treatment of their colleague.
Former MP Kennedy Agyapong also publicly volunteered to be one of the sureties.
Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin condemned the handling of the case, calling for fairness and respect for the law in EOCO’s investigation process.
