Ghanaian international Mohammed Salisu is set for an extended period on the sidelines after AS Monaco confirmed he has torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee.
The injury was sustained during Monaco’s Ligue 1 defeat to Olympique Lyonnais at the weekend, with the centre-back forced off in the final stages of the match.
Medical examinations carried out after the game confirmed the severity of the injury, which typically requires several months of rehabilitation.
The setback comes as a significant blow for both AS Monaco, where Salisu has been a key defensive figure, and Ghana, with the defender expected to play a central role for the Black Stars at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.
AS Monaco issued a statement pledging full support for the defender, “The Club will support Mohammed throughout his recovery and is behind him all the way. Stay strong, Sarki, we’re with you.”
Salisu, 26, had recently regained form after a disrupted start to the 2025/2026 season. He has featured in 18 matches across all competitions this season and has been a consistent presence in Ghana’s national team since appearing at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Reports suggest the injury could put his participation in the 2026 World Cup in doubt. Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama, with fixtures set in both the United States and Canada.
This injury adds to a growing concern for Ghana, with several of the country’s top players—including Ernest Nuamah, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, and Daniel Kofi Kyereh—recently sidelined due to serious knee injuries.
AS Monaco are expected to provide updates on Salisu’s recovery and potential return to action in the coming weeks as he begins the long rehabilitation process.
