Former Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, has officially been sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East following his victory in the constituency’s by-election.

The election was held after the demise of the late MP, Mahama Toure, which left the seat vacant.

Baba Jamal secured a commanding win with 10,884 votes, surpassing his closest rival, Baba Ali, who obtained 4,009 votes.

Independent candidates Umar Sanda and David Kanor received 1,885 and 107 votes respectively, while LPG candidate Ibrahim Idrissu polled 43 votes. A total of 17,048 votes were cast across 113 polling stations, with 120 ballots rejected.

The swearing-in ceremony took place on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, inside the Parliament chamber in Accra. During the event, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin administered the oath of office and allegiance, formally marking the start of Baba Jamal’s tenure as the constituency’s representative.

Addressing the new MP, Bagbin reminded him of his duty to the people of Ayawaso East.

“During your campaign, you promised the people of Ayawaso East that you wanted to serve them as a Member of Parliament, and by doing so, serve Ghana. You don’t want to serve Ghana as a High Commissioner in Nigeria,” the Speaker said. “I will hold you accountable to the people of Ayawaso East and watch your performance on this floor.”

Baba Jamal’s inauguration signals the beginning of his mandate to represent the constituency in Parliament and to advance development initiatives for his constituents.
