The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has stressed the need for urgent improvements to Ghana’s sports infrastructure ahead of the country’s hosting of the 2027 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Mr. Adams confirmed that Ghana has secured the hosting rights for the continental youth tournament but cautioned that significant work must be done to upgrade existing facilities to meet the standards required for a successful competition.
Speaking on 3FM, the Sports Minister welcomed the opportunity to host the tournament but said the focus must now shift to preparing the country’s sporting venues.
“Ghana has gotten the bid to host the U-20 African Championship next year, but we cannot host these events if we don’t upgrade some of our facilities,” he said.
His comments come amid concerns over the condition of some of Ghana’s major sporting facilities, including the Accra Sports Stadium, which will require renovations to satisfy the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) requirements for hosting international competitions.
CAF officially awarded the hosting rights to Ghana in May 2026, making it the second time the country will host the U-20 AFCON after the nation successfully staged and won the tournament in 1999.
The upcoming tournament is expected to provide Ghana with an opportunity to showcase its football heritage while also highlighting the need for long-term investment in sports infrastructure across the country.
