The Ministry of the Interior has urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid unnecessary movement following heavy rains and flooding that affected several parts of the country on Sunday morning.
In a public safety advisory issued on June 29, the Ministry advised residents to remain in safe locations until conditions improve.
“As a precautionary public safety measure, members of the public are advised to remain where they are until conditions improve. Those who are safely at home are urged to stay at home, while those who are at their workplaces or other safe locations should remain there until it is safe to travel. Unnecessary movement should be avoided,” the statement said.
The Ministry also cautioned motorists and pedestrians against attempting to cross flooded roads, bridges and waterways.
“Motorists and pedestrians are strongly advised not to attempt to drive or walk through flooded roads, bridges, or waterways, as floodwaters can rise rapidly and pose significant danger to life and property,” it warned.
According to the advisory, emergency response agencies, including the Ghana Police Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Armed Forces and the National Disaster Management Organisation, have been deployed to monitor the situation, assist affected persons, manage traffic and carry out rescue operations where necessary.
Residents living in flood-prone communities have also been advised to move to higher ground where it is safe to do so and report emergencies or persons in distress to the nearest security agency or emergency response service.
The Ministry urged the public to remain calm, cooperate with emergency personnel and rely only on official sources for information and updates.
It further encouraged members of the public requiring emergency assistance to contact the Ghana Police Service on 18555 or 112, the Ghana National Fire Service on 192, or NADMO on 112.
The advisory, signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, assured the public that the government continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide further updates as necessary, while extending its concern to all those affected by the flooding.
