The Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) has signed a tripartite agreement with the Ministry of Defence and the Forestry Commission to undertake the reclamation of the degraded Tano Nirem Forest Reserve.
Under the agreement, the Ghana Army Engineers Regiment of the Ghana Armed Forces will lead the reclamation works as part of efforts to restore areas of the forest affected by environmental degradation, particularly from illegal mining activities.
The partnership is expected to combine the technical expertise and operational capacity of the military with the environmental management mandate of the Forestry Commission and the support of GOLDBOD to rehabilitate the forest ecosystem.
The Chief Executive Officer of GOLDBOD, Sammy Gyamfi says the initiative forms part of broader national efforts to combat environmental destruction, restore degraded lands and protect Ghana’s forest reserves from the impact of illegal mining and other harmful activities.
The reclamation project is also expected to contribute to biodiversity conservation, watershed protection and the long-term sustainability of natural resources within the Tano Nirem Forest Reserve.
The collaboration underscores the growing role of inter-agency partnerships in addressing environmental challenges and advancing the government’s commitment to responsible natural resource management and ecological restoration.
Stakeholders expressed optimism that the project would serve as a model for future reclamation efforts across other degraded forest reserves in the country.
