The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has inaugurated a steering committee to oversee the implementation of the Accra Green and Clean City Initiative.
The inauguration took place at the Ministry’s conference room, with the Ga Mantse, King Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, appointed to chair the committee.
The committee comprises representatives from key technical agencies, the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
The initiative seeks to transform Accra into a cleaner, greener, healthier and more attractive city through sustainable partnerships with corporate organisations.
A key component of the programme is the Adopt-a-Street/Adopt-a-Corridor Programme, which will encourage corporate institutions to partner with the Ministry and local assemblies to maintain designated streets, medians, roundabouts and other public spaces.
Under the programme, participating organisations are expected to support regular cleaning, landscaping and tree planting as part of their corporate social responsibility activities.
Speaking at the inauguration, Mr Ayariga tasked the committee with developing an implementation framework, identifying priority corridors and mobilising corporate partners to support the initiative.
He also charged members to establish effective monitoring mechanisms to track progress and ensure the programme delivers visible improvements across the capital.
The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen environmental management and promote collaboration between government institutions, local authorities and the private sector in addressing sanitation and urban beautification challenges in Accra.
The Ministry is expected to work with the committee and other stakeholders to coordinate implementation and ensure the initiative contributes to a cleaner and more sustainable city.
