Mahama and Boeing discuss strategic partnership to revive Ghana’s national airline

President John Dramani Mahama has held discussions with senior executives of Boeing in New York on a potential strategic partnership to support Ghana’s plans to revive a national airline.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly and followed months of engagements initiated by Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States, Victor Emmanuel Smith, and his team.

The engagements included an earlier visit to Boeing and subsequent discussions aimed at developing a broader partnership between Ghana and the global aerospace company.

President Mahama said Ghana’s interest in working with Boeing went beyond the acquisition of aircraft, stressing the need for a partnership that would contribute to the development of a broader aviation ecosystem.

“Ghana does not want its relationship with Boeing to be defined simply by the purchase of aircraft.

We want a strategic partnership that helps us build an aviation ecosystem—creating skilled jobs, transferring technology, strengthening our industrial base and positioning Ghana as an aviation and logistics hub for West Africa,” he said.

The discussions focused on areas including national carrier and fleet development, technical support, aviation training, skills development and technology transfer.

Another key area under consideration is the potential establishment of a regional Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hub in Ghana to serve airlines operating across West Africa and other parts of the continent.

The proposed MRO facility could also support the development of technical expertise and create high-value employment opportunities for young Ghanaians, according to the discussions.

Boeing expressed readiness to work with the Ghanaian government as plans for the national carrier progress.

The company indicated that, subject to the necessary structures and implementation arrangements being put in place, Ghana’s objective of returning a national airline to the skies within approximately 18 months could be achievable.

The proposed partnership forms part of President Mahama’s broader Reset Ghana Agenda, which seeks to attract strategic international investment, expand employment opportunities and strengthen local technical capacity.

The government also aims to position Ghana as a competitive gateway for trade, aviation and logistics in West Africa.

The discussions therefore seek to link the revival of a national carrier with wider development of Ghana’s aviation sector, including tourism, trade, regional connectivity and technical skills.

President Mahama said Ghana was looking for partners prepared to invest, build capacity and participate in the country’s economic development.

“As we Reset Ghana, we are looking for partners prepared to invest with us, build capacity with us and share in the prosperity we create. Boeing can be one of those strategic partners,” he said.
