The government has temporarily suspended plans to redevelop the Agbogbloshie 24-Hour Economy Market to allow for further consultations with market leaders, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and other stakeholders.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, announced the decision on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.
He made the announcement during an engagement with traders and leaders of the Yam Market at Agbogbloshie.
Mr. Ayariga was accompanied by the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and the Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey.
The temporary pause will allow the government and the AMA to review the proposed redevelopment plan.
It will also give stakeholders an opportunity to assess the current conditions at the market.
Mr. Ayariga said the consultations would help the government develop a practical plan that protects the livelihoods of existing traders.
He said the redevelopment should improve market infrastructure without ignoring the commercial activities already taking place in the area.
“You will be part of the process, and you will lead the discussions on how the redevelopment should be done and how the allocations should be made,” Mr. Ayariga told traders.
The Minister said the government’s wider goal is to improve market infrastructure across the country through the 24-Hour Economy Market initiative. He stressed that the initiative is not only about constructing new markets.
It also requires the government to consider existing traders and their businesses when planning redevelopment projects. Mr. Ayariga said Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies had been directed to develop improved market infrastructure.
He added that the latest engagement would allow the government, the AMA and market operators to work together on the most suitable approach for Agbogbloshie.
Further consultations are expected before the government finalises the redevelopment plan.
