Assembly members across Greater Accra Region have announced their formal endorsement of former President John Dramani Mahama as their preferred candidate for the December 2024 presidential election.
In a press conference held at Anyaa, Accra, the assembly members expressed frustration with the economic direction of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government.
“After careful deliberation, consultation, and reflection on the state of our nation, we have come to a collective decision to publicly express our disappointment in the current administration led by the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” they stated. “Over the past seven years, the NPP administration has consistently promised economic transformation, stability, and growth. Sadly, the results have fallen far short of the expectations set before the Ghanaian people.”
The assembly members argued that economic issues central to the NPP’s previous campaigns—currency depreciation, inflation, public debt, and unemployment—have worsened, leading to widespread hardship for Ghanaians.
The assembly members lamented the increasing financial strain on Ghanaians due to high inflation, currency depreciation, and rising costs of living “.
The spiraling inflation rates, depreciating cedi, and skyrocketing cost of living have made life unbearable for Ghanaians,” they added, noting that businesses across the country have been significantly impacted by high taxes and what they described as unfavorable economic policies.
“Citizens are struggling to afford basic necessities, and businesses are collapsing under the weight of unbearable taxes and unfavorable economic conditions.”
Concerns were also raised about youth unemployment, which the assembly members warned could destabilize communities and undermine national security. “Unemployment, particularly among the youth, has reached alarming levels,” they stated, adding that this has hindered local development and diminished quality of life in communities throughout Greater Accra.
In endorsing Mahama, the assembly members described the NDC candidate as the “best alternative” to restore Ghana’s economic stability and address the needs of local communities. “After extensive discussions and analysis, more than two-thirds of the elected Assembly Members of Greater Accra have taken the bold step to endorse former President John Dramani Mahama as the leader who can turn things around and restore hope to Ghanaians,” they declared.
“We do not take this decision lightly. John Mahama has demonstrated not only a deep understanding of the economic challenges facing Ghana but also a clear and comprehensive vision for how to address these issues. His record speaks for itself.”
The assembly members referenced to Mahama’s track record in infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and energy as concrete examples of his commitment to national progress. They praised his previous administration’s focus on projects that brought long-term benefits to communities across the country, from road construction and social infrastructure to the expansion of energy and health services.
