The Chief of Mowire in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Gyamfi Kumanin Sarpong, has called on Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country to prioritise grassroots engagement and accountability as a core principle of local governance.
He made the appeal while commending the Afigya Kwabre South District Chief Executive, Patricia Pearl Ankrah, for initiating a week-long public engagement and accountability tour within the district.
The initiative, which marks 18 months into the current government’s tenure, is designed to enhance transparency, strengthen citizen participation, and provide residents with updates on ongoing and completed development projects.
Speaking during the tour’s stop at Mowire, Nana Sarpong said such engagements help bridge the gap between local authorities and communities, allowing residents to better understand development efforts while also directly communicating their concerns.
He noted that even where development projects are yet to fully reach certain communities, town-hall engagements offer an important platform for dialogue between citizens and leadership.
Describing the initiative as timely, he encouraged other MMDCEs to adopt similar approaches to improve trust, accountability, and development outcomes at the local level.
During the engagement, Nana Sarpong appealed for urgent attention to the poor condition of roads in Mowire, warning that the situation was affecting local economic activities and posing health risks to residents.
In response, Hon. Ankrah assured residents that the Mowire road forms part of a broader district road network project already awarded to contractors.
She explained that implementation had been temporarily delayed due to outstanding legal processes but assured that the issues were being addressed to allow contractors to resume work soon.
