President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to completing the Western Regional Hospital Project within the next 18 months, bringing renewed hope to residents after nearly two years of inactivity.
The 250-bed facility, which began in 2022, came to a standstill in 2023 due to financial constraints arising from the previous government’s debt restructuring programme.
Speaking during a working tour of the Western Region, President Mahama assured traditional leaders and residents of Apemanim in the Agona Nkwanta Municipality that his administration would not repeat the cycle of project abandonment that has plagued successive governments.
He said the move aligns with his pledge to ensure continuity in governance and forms part of his “Resetting Agenda,” which prioritises the completion of critical infrastructure, particularly in the health sector.
“During the 2024 campaign, many Ghanaians expressed frustration over how new governments often abandon projects started by their predecessors. I promised that under my leadership, we would break that pattern. Every viable project, regardless of who started it, will be completed,” the President said.
President Mahama revealed that financial bottlenecks were the primary reason behind the stalled work, explaining that the government’s inability to meet debt obligations in 2023 caused banks to withhold funds needed for the project.
He credited his administration’s swift intervention for resolving those challenges and restoring funding to resume construction. “Your Regional Minister has been consistent in advocating for these projects. Now that the financial hurdles have been cleared, work will resume fully. We expect the Regional Hospital to be completed and commissioned within 18 months,” he assured.
The completion of the Western Regional Hospital is expected to significantly improve access to healthcare services across the region and reduce the pressure on existing health facilities.
