Former Energy Minister Boakye Kyeremateng Agyarko has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), signalling his return to frontline party leadership as the party prepares for internal restructuring ahead of the 2028 elections.
In a statement released on September 30, 2025, Mr. Agyarko said his decision followed careful reflection and extensive consultations with his family, close confidants, party members, and supporters across the country. He explained that the calls for him to lead the NPP at this critical moment had become impossible to ignore.
“Having considered all the factors and listened carefully to the voices of party members and even many outside our party, I see it as my bounden duty to respond to this call to duty. I will therefore contest for the position of National Chairman of my party once nominations are opened,” he announced.
The move is already generating significant interest among party members, particularly within the grassroots and diaspora branches.
Many see Mr. Agyarko as a bridge-builder with the experience, credibility, and moral authority needed to restore unity and discipline in the party following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Supporters argue that his long-standing service to the NPP — including his resilience during years of political exile and unwavering loyalty to the party — make him uniquely positioned to lead the next phase of its rebuilding process.
