The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to strengthen monitoring and accountability mechanisms within his administration to ensure that government appointees effectively implement his policies and programmes.
Mr Koomson said some government officials appeared more focused on the privileges and benefits associated with their positions than on delivering the policies and programmes of the administration.
Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, August 22, 2026, he called on the President to establish a robust monitoring structure to track the performance of ministers, chief executives and other government appointees.
Mr Koomson also raised concerns about the implementation of the government’s MahamaCares initiative, officially known as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF), following the death of his 44-year-old son.
In an emotional account, he disclosed that his son died at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH) in Tema after a period of illness.
He said the high cost of his son’s treatment heightened his interest in MahamaCares, which was introduced to provide financial support and specialised care for Ghanaians suffering from serious chronic and Non-Communicable Diseases.
According to Mr Koomson, he made efforts to have his son enrolled onto the programme to access the necessary medical support, but the process was not completed before his son died.
The MahamaCares initiative is intended to provide financial assistance and specialised treatment to patients suffering from critical conditions such as cancer, kidney failure, stroke and cardiovascular diseases, particularly where treatment costs exceed what is covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
Mr Koomson questioned the mechanisms in place to oversee the implementation of the programme and ensure that eligible patients can access the assistance intended for them.
“Who is in charge of MahamaCares?” he asked, stressing the need for effective oversight to ensure that government policies translate into tangible benefits for citizens.
The labour leader said President Mahama must ensure that government appointees remain focused on implementing the administration’s policies and addressing the needs of Ghanaians.
He argued that without effective monitoring, well-intentioned government initiatives could fail to achieve their intended impact because of weaknesses in implementation.
Mr Koomson also expressed gratitude to individuals who provided financial assistance to him and his family during his son’s treatment.
He said the support was invaluable to the family during the difficult period and expressed appreciation to all those who stood by them following the death of his son.
