Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has vowed to remain committed to defending the New Patriotic Party (NPP) despite criticism and personal attacks over his position on reported losses by the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
The controversy centres on claims that GoldBod recorded losses of GH¢22 billion, equivalent to about US$1.7 billion, from its operations in 2025. GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi has accused Afenyo-Markin of running a smear campaign against the institution instead of engaging constructively on accountability.
Afenyo-Markin, however, maintains that the Minority’s concerns are based on facts and that policy failures contributed to the reported losses.
Speaking to Metro TV, he said the attacks would not deter him from performing his duties or pursuing the issue.
“What we are telling the people of Ghana about these losses is the truth. Nothing more, nothing less,” he said.
Afenyo-Markin said he was prepared to withstand the criticism, citing sacrifices made by members of his family for the NPP.
“My stepfather fought for the party. My mom fought for the party. My daddy suffered for the party. And it’s my turn. I will fight for the party with a clear mind. And I will not shake,” he said.
He urged the governing NDC to acknowledge what he described as policy failures and work with the Minority to find a way forward.
Afenyo-Markin also stressed that despite political disagreements, he would continue to respect institutions and those who occupy public offices.
“Minority Leader is not an easy job; sometimes you can be lonely. When everything is going round, round, round, you have to do the heavy lifting,” he said.
He vowed to continue pursuing the GoldBod issue, insisting that his focus remains on the party and what he considers to be in the national interest.
