‘Minority Leader can be lonely’ – Afenyo-Markin speaks on pressures of opposition role

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has described the position of Minority Leader as a difficult and sometimes lonely role, saying the responsibilities require resilience and a willingness to take on difficult issues.

In an interview on Metro TV, Afenyo-Markin said the position often requires the Minority Leader to carry the burden of defending the party and confronting issues even when there is little support.

“Minority Leader is not an easy job; sometimes you can be lonely. When everything is going round, round, round, you have to do the heavy lifting,” he said.

His comments come amid a growing dispute between the parliamentary Minority and Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) CEO Sammy Gyamfi, Esq. over reported losses of GH¢22 billion, equivalent to about US$1.7 billion, from GoldBod’s operations in 2025.

Mr. Gyamfi has accused Afenyo-Markin of pursuing a smear campaign against GoldBod, while the Minority Leader insists that the concerns raised about the reported losses are based on facts and should be addressed.

Despite criticism and personal attacks over the issue, Afenyo-Markin said he would not be deterred from carrying out his responsibilities.

He said his approach to politics was shaped by respect for institutions and the need to maintain cordial relations even amid disagreements.

Afenyo-Markin also referenced former Minority Leaders J.H. Mensah and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, saying they faced similar challenges while serving in opposition.

He maintained that he would continue to pursue issues he believes are in the interest of the NPP and the country, regardless of the pressure that comes with the position.
