Dr Opoku questions why Ato Forson’s debt payments should not be celebrated, when borrowing was heavily celebrated

Policy analyst and strategist Dr Razak Kojo Opoku has questioned the criticism surrounding government’s celebration of debt repayments under Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson.

Dr Opoku said he found it difficult to understand why the repayment of bondholders should not be celebrated by the current administration, particularly when similar borrowing by the previous government was publicly highlighted.

In a commentary on the issue on his Facebook page, Dr Opoku drew a comparison with the approach of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who, he said, celebrated government’s borrowing during his tenure.

“If borrowing was celebrated by Ken Ofori-Atta, I do not understand why paying bondholders should not be celebrated by Ato Forson,” Dr Opoku argued.

He described the situation as an “interesting logic,” suggesting that there appeared to be an inconsistency in how borrowing and debt repayment were being assessed under different administrations.

Dr Opoku’s comments come amid ongoing public discussions over Ghana’s debt management, government borrowing and the country’s obligations to domestic and external creditors.

He argued that the repayment of bondholders represented an important aspect of responsible debt management and questioned why such payments should not be acknowledged as a positive development.

The debate forms part of broader discussions over Ghana’s fiscal position and the government’s efforts to manage public debt while meeting its financial obligations.
