Former Minister for Local Government and Rural Development , Akwasi Opong-Fosu has called for the restoration, renewal and resetting of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
Mr. Opong-Fosu made the call during an engagement with members of the NDC Western Region Caucus as part of his ongoing consultations with party stakeholders ahead of a formal declaration of his political intentions.
He said the engagement provided an opportunity to listen to party members, exchange ideas and discuss how the NDC could strengthen its structures while supporting the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
According to him, his vision for the party is anchored on three interconnected pillars: Restoration, Renewal and Resetting.
He explained that the NDC must restore the values and principles that have sustained it as a major political tradition, renew the mindset, commitment and sense of purpose of its members, and reset its structures and approaches to respond to the changing expectations of Ghanaians.
Mr. Opong-Fosu said the party had a responsibility to consolidate the legacy of President Mahama, arguing that the success of the current administration should provide a strong foundation for the NDC’s next political chapter.
He stressed that the party’s responsibility should go beyond winning elections to building a united, disciplined and inclusive organisation that remains firmly connected to its grassroots.
“Every member, from the branch level to the national leadership, must feel valued and have a meaningful role in shaping our collective future,” he said.
Mr. Opong-Fosu further noted that while the NDC must preserve its founding values of probity, accountability and social justice, it must also embrace innovation, organisational effectiveness and a renewed sense of purpose to respond to the realities of a changing Ghana.
He said the strength of the party ahead of 2028 and beyond would depend on its ability to combine its traditional values with new ideas and approaches that meet the aspirations of its members and the Ghanaian people.
The former Minister described his meeting with the Western Region Caucus as part of a broader consultation process involving stakeholders across the country.
He said he would continue engaging party members and leaders and keep exchanging ideas before making a formal declaration at the appropriate time.
Mr. Opong-Fosu said the task ahead was clear: to restore the NDC’s values, renew its collective mindset, reset its structures, consolidate President Mahama’s legacy and position the party strongly for 2028 and beyond.
