The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has indicated that former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo could be reinstated if the party returns to power, describing her removal from office as unjust.
The party argued that the circumstances surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal warrant a review and possible reversal.
Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin alleged that the process leading to her removal was part of what he described as a “grand conspiracy” involving some members of the Supreme Court, including the current Chief Justice, Paul Baffoe-Bonnie.
“It was a grand conspiracy. I have said so and I have not minced words on that. My Lord Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor, Gertrude Torkornoo,” he alleged.
He also raised questions about the report that formed the basis of the petition seeking Justice Torkornoo’s removal, arguing that the document had not been finalised before the process was concluded.
“If the NPP comes to power, I don’t know why she won’t be reinstated. Of course, she will be reinstated,” he stated.
Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023 and became the first head of Ghana’s Judiciary under the Fourth Republic to be removed from office.
Her removal followed a petition submitted to President John Dramani Mahama and a subsequent constitutional process conducted under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
