The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has joined a growing number of plaintiffs challenging aspects of Ghana’s constitutional provisions on presidential term limits at the Supreme Court.

Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem-Sai disclosed that the latest suit filed by the NPP brings to five the number of cases currently pending before the apex court against the Attorney-General on the issue.

In a post on Facebook, Justice Srem-Sai listed the cases and the dates on which they were filed.

The latest action, New Patriotic Party v The Attorney-General (J1/27/2026), was filed on July 30, 2026.

It follows four other suits already before the Supreme Court, namely:

  • Azubila E. Salam v The Attorney-General (J1/4/2026) – filed on December 23, 2025.
  • Kenneth K.A. Kuranchie v The Attorney-General (J1/20/2026) – filed on June 30, 2026.
  • Ganiwu Alhassan v The Attorney-General (J1/21/2026) – filed on July 9, 2026.
  • Eric Appiah v The Attorney-General (J1/26/2026) – filed on July 20, 2026.
  • New Patriotic Party v The Attorney-General (J1/27/2026) – filed on July 30, 2026.

The suits seek judicial interpretation and determination of constitutional provisions relating to presidential term limits.

The development places the Supreme Court at the centre of an emerging constitutional debate over the interpretation and application of the provisions governing presidential tenure in Ghana.

The Attorney-General is the respondent in all five cases, with the Supreme Court expected to determine the legal questions raised by the respective plaintiffs.
