The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has banned the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for long-distance commercial transport, citing safety risks linked to fatal accidents.
The decision follows a technical review which found that many of the vehicles, often converted from right-hand to left-hand drive, are unsuitable for commercial use.
Chairman of the committee, Godwin Kafui Ayetor, said, “The manufacturer informed us that the Toyota Voxy is a minivan designed for young middle-class families, not for commercial passenger use.”
He added that modifications to the vehicles further compromise safety: “As part of the conversion, the suspension is altered and the vehicle is raised… the tyres… are passenger tyres, not designed for high payload or high mileage.”
The committee also flagged regulatory lapses, stating, “We observed a systemic regulatory breakdown… These vehicles are often unlawfully imported, improperly converted, and operated as commercial transport, posing serious safety risks.”
The NRSA says it will enforce the recommendations to curb accidents and improve road safety.
