Kotoka International Airport has officially been renamed Accra International Airport following a decision by the Government of Ghana.
The announcement was made by the Ministry of Transport in a statement issued on February 23, 2026, confirming that the change takes immediate effect.
According to the Ministry, the renaming forms part of efforts to rebrand and reposition Ghana’s main international gateway to reflect its geographical identity as the capital’s airport.
Authorities say the move is aimed at strengthening Accra’s global visibility and enhancing the country’s aviation profile.
The airport, originally named after former Head of State Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, has served as Ghana’s primary international hub for decades, connecting the country to major destinations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.
Government indicated that relevant agencies in the aviation sector have been directed to ensure a smooth transition, including updates to official documentation, branding materials and international aviation records.
Further details on the implementation process are expected in the coming days.
