President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to keep alive the memory of the eight victims of last year’s military helicopter crash, saying a nation that forgets those who served it risks losing the values that define it.

Speaking at the National Inter-Faith Memorial Service to mark the first anniversary of the tragedy on Wednesday, August 6, the President said the occasion was not only to mourn the departed but also to celebrate lives dedicated to selfless service.

“Today, we gather not to relive that pain, but to give it meaning. We gather because remembrance is an obligation for every grateful nation.”

President Mahama stressed that remembering those who sacrificed for the country is a moral responsibility that strengthens national identity.

“A country that forgets those who served it slowly forgets the values on which it is built. Memory, therefore, is not simply about looking backwards. It is an act of national character and value.”

He said the eight victims came from different backgrounds and professions but shared one common purpose—serving Ghana with dedication.

The President reflected on the uncertainty of life, noting that none of the victims knew the flight would be their last.

“None of them boarded that helicopter expecting that it would be their final journey. Like countless public servants every day, they set out to perform their duties.”

He added that the tragedy should inspire Ghanaians to value the sacrifices of public servants and uphold the ideals for which they lived.

The memorial service marked one year since the military helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, which claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah; Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; National Democratic Congress Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manaen Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The accident remains one of the most devastating tragedies in Ghana’s recent history, prompting a nationwide outpouring of grief and renewed calls to honour the sacrifices of those who dedicate their lives to public service.
