Government has announced an immediate ban on the land transit of cooking oil following the interception of articulated trucks linked to a suspected transit diversion scheme at the Aflao border.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, who visited the border posts after the incident, described the development as an abuse of Ghana’s transit regime and directed swift corrective measures to safeguard state revenue.
As part of the new directive, all cooking oil consignments intended for transit through Ghana must now be routed exclusively through the country’s seaports.
The Minister explained that the decision is aimed at tightening controls, preventing revenue leakages, and strengthening oversight within the customs system.
In addition, all transactions originating from land collection points will be subjected to enhanced monitoring, tracking, and strict compliance enforcement.
Dr. Forson emphasized that government remains committed to protecting domestic revenue mobilisation and local industry, warning that Ghana’s customs framework will not be allowed to be exploited.
The new measures take immediate effect as authorities intensify efforts to prevent further abuse of the transit regime.
