Authorities in the Central Region are providing full care to a newborn baby girl who was discovered abandoned near Bronyibima Estate in Elmina on Tuesday, February 17, 2026.
The infant, believed to be only a day old, was found by a local farmer who initially mistook her cries for those of an animal.
Upon discovering the baby wrapped in a cloth inside a polythene bag, he immediately alerted nearby residents, and she was rushed to Bronyibima Hospital. Medical personnel confirmed that the baby is in stable condition.
In a statement, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection confirmed that it has taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety. The Ministry is coordinating with the Ghana Police Service to trace the baby’s mother or close relatives.
“Officials from the Department of Social Welfare have taken temporary custody of the child to ensure her safety,” the statement read.
“The baby’s overall well-being remains our priority, and appropriate arrangements have been made while investigations continue.”
The Ministry also thanked the community for their swift response and urged anyone with information that could assist authorities to come forward. Parents or guardians facing difficult circumstances are encouraged to seek guidance from social welfare services.
Members of the public can report information or seek support through the Ministry’s Helpline of Hope Call Centre at 0800-800-800 or 0800-900-900.
The Ministry reiterated that abandoning a child is a serious violation of their rights and emphasized its commitment to protecting all children in Ghana.
