Illegal gold and jewellery operators are in trouble as the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) plans to deploy inspectors nationwide from Monday, February 2, 2026, to clamp down on unlicensed activities in the sector.
The enforcement exercise will target jewellery manufacturers, gold fabricators and refineries operating without valid GoldBod licences, an offence punishable under the Precious Minerals and Gold (GoldBod) Act, 1140.
GoldBod said all existing operators were given up to December 31, 2025, to regularise their operations, but inspections will now begin to ensure full compliance with the law.
“The deployment of inspectors is to ensure that only duly licensed persons are engaged in jewellery manufacturing, gold fabrication and gold refining businesses in Ghana,” the Board stated.
GoldBod also acknowledged companies that have complied with the licensing requirements, including Sourcechain Enterprise and Shepaj Limited Company, as it moves to tighten regulation and sanitise the gold industry.
