Authorities have begun investigations into a fatal explosion at a mining tailings site in Aboso, near Tarkwa, after a suspected cache of illegally stored explosives detonated, killing three people and injuring three others.

The incident occurred around midday on Tuesday, August 4, and has renewed concerns over the unlawful handling and storage of explosive materials in mining communities.

Initial police findings suggest the explosion was triggered during an attempt to kill a python that had been spotted at the site. Workers reportedly alerted the site’s owner, David Kofi Fletcher, who arrived carrying a pump-action shotgun.

Investigators believe pellets discharged from the firearm may have struck explosive materials believed to have been concealed at the location, setting off the blast.

Mr. Fletcher died at the scene alongside two other men identified as Solomon and Baba. Three additional victims survived the explosion and are receiving medical treatment.

The deceased have been transferred to the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital Mortuary, where autopsies are expected to be conducted.

The force of the explosion extended beyond the mining site, damaging nearby homes and vehicles. Several houses had their windows blown out, while six vehicles parked at a nearby washing bay suffered smashed windscreens and side windows.

Police say investigators are now working to establish why explosive materials were allegedly being kept at the site and whether those responsible breached laws regulating the possession and storage of explosives.

The Minerals Commission has joined the investigation as authorities seek to determine the full cause of the explosion.

Expressing sympathy to the bereaved families, the Western Central Regional Police Command also appealed to the public to remain vigilant, warning that the illegal possession, storage, handling or sale of explosives poses “a serious threat to public safety.” Residents have been encouraged to report suspicious activities involving explosives to the nearest police station.
