President John Dramani Mahama has donated relief items worth GHC 10 million to support Sudan, Jamaica, and Cuba in the wake of humanitarian crises and extreme weather events.
Speaking at the Presidency, Mahama explained the gesture while not a solution to the crises, aims to alleviate suffering and encourage global solidarity.
“Even though Ghana’s contribution would not resolve the humanitarian suffering that is going on, we believe that if every country contributes its quota, we can help to alleviate what is happening in these places,” Mahama said.
The donations include 2,400 bags of rice, 540 bags of sugar, 377 boxes of assorted medication, 1,500 mattresses, 500 pillows, 100 cartons of fortified Gary mix, 50,000 t-shirts, assorted chocolates and cocoa products, water tanks, handwash stations, portable toilets, and clothing.
Mahama noted, “These humanitarian items are worth about 10 million Ghana cedis… 50 percent of the products are going to Africa. 30 percent are going to Cuba. And 20 percent will be handed over to the International Red Cross for their camps in Sudan.”
The president expressed gratitude to contributors, stating, “We appealed to the private sector, business people, and they really came up. And all these products have been donated by Ghanaian business people, foreign businesses… I want to, on behalf of government, say a big thank you to them for this very humanitarian gesture that they have done.”
This initiative, he said, underscores Ghana’s tradition of solidarity and compassion in supporting nations facing extreme humanitarian challenges.
