The Ghana Railways Development Agency (GRDA) has introduced a new cargo train service designed to transport shipping containers directly from the ports to designated warehouses, in a move aimed at improving efficiency in freight logistics and reducing road congestion.
The initiative is expected to streamline cargo handling by offering a faster and more reliable alternative to road transport, while cutting down turnaround time for goods cleared at the port.
According to the Agency, the service forms part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s rail infrastructure and strengthen the country’s logistics chain to support trade and industrial growth.
By shifting a significant portion of container movement from roads to rail, the new system is also expected to ease pressure on major highways, reduce transport costs, and enhance safety in freight distribution.
The Ghana Railways Development Agency says it will continue to expand rail-based cargo services in line with government’s transport modernization agenda.
