Godwin Ako Gunn, the Acting Communications Officer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has congratulated newly elected party officers following last weekend’s elections, urging them to demonstrate discipline, teamwork and responsible communication throughout their four-year tenure.
In a statement dated October 27, 2026, Mr Gunn, speaking on behalf of the Communication Team, encouraged the winners to work together to strengthen the party’s structures and improve its chances of securing more parliamentary seats.
He reminded the new executives that leadership was a long-term responsibility, describing their tenure as “a four-year marathon, not a sprint.”
He also urged them to recognise the expectations that come with leadership and ensure their conduct, words and actions reflected the values and aspirations of the party.
Mr Gunn identified effective communication as one of the first lessons the newly elected officers should learn before beginning their orientation.
Although politicians are naturally communicators, he cautioned the executives against commenting on every issue, particularly sensitive matters, without the necessary clearance.
He said responsible communication would help the party coordinate its responses and avoid placing communicators under pressure to defend statements made by party officials.
Mr Gunn’s advice follows what he described as a difficult period for the Communication Team after an allegation involving a former constituency secretary attracted public attention.
He said the incident demonstrated the responsibility that comes with occupying executive positions and urged the new officers to conduct themselves in ways that would make the party proud.
Mr Gunn also stressed the importance of emotional intelligence, urging the newly elected officers to celebrate their victories with humility and accept defeat with dignity.
He said their conduct during moments of celebration and disappointment would influence relationships within the party and shape their future responsibilities.
He further called on party officials to maintain high standards of governance and accountability, arguing that such expectations should apply to party officers as well as government officials.
According to him, the party must remain mindful of the consequences of individual conduct and ensure that the actions of its members do not bring it into disrepute.
Mr Gunn urged candidates who lost the elections to remain committed to the party and support the newly elected executives.
He encouraged them to continue contributing to the party’s development, assuring them that electoral defeat should not be regarded as the end of their political aspirations.
“No door remains permanently closed to anyone,” he said, urging unsuccessful candidates to remain hopeful about future opportunities.
Mr Gunn concluded by describing the election weekend as successful and called for unity, cooperation and responsible leadership as the newly elected officers prepare to assume their duties.
