Norbert Gborgbortsi, Convener of the Aggrieved Public Sectors Union, has been arrested on charges of fraud. He is currently undergoing legal proceedings at the Adabraka District Court, facing charges of abetment of crime and conspiracy to commit crime.
The case centers around Gborgbortsi’s alleged involvement in a fraudulent scheme, in which he is accused of exploiting an innocent journalist (name withheld) and a policewoman seeking admission to the Police Academy in Tesano, Accra. According to reports, the policewoman approached the journalist for help with the admission process, but the journalist had no personal connections or knowledge of how to assist her.
At this point, Gborgbortsi allegedly intervened, claiming he knew a senior police officer who could facilitate the admission for a fee of 40,000 cedis. Trusting Gborgbortsi, the journalist agreed to pass along the money. Gborgbortsi assured the journalist that everything would be taken care of and took him to meet the officer at the National Police Headquarters. However, no direct conversation about the matter took place, with Gborgbortsi simply telling the journalist that the officer would “know what to do.”
The policewoman, through her brother, provided the 40,000 cedis, which was then handed to the journalist. The journalist, believing in the arrangement, gave the money to Gborgbortsi, trusting that the process would be completed.
When the Police Academy’s admission list was released and the policewoman’s name was not included, the journalist confronted Gborgbortsi, who reportedly evaded questions. Seeking clarity, the journalist approached the officer, only to learn that the officer had no knowledge of the payment and had not been involved in facilitating the admission process. The officer further denied any such conversation with Gborgbortsi.
Following the incident, the journalist reported the matter to the Amasaman Police Station, leading to Gborgbortsi’s initial detention. However, he later jumped bail and went into hiding. After sustained pressure from the victim, Gborgbortsi was located and rearrested in Dansoman, Accra. He was brought to the Adabraka Police Station, where he was officially charged. Although he was granted bail, the conditions for his release have not yet been met.
In addition to these charges, Gborgbortsi is also facing accusations of visa fraud in Tamale. He is alleged to have collected over 90,000 cedis from an individual, promising to secure a UK work permit and visa. In connection with this, the Tamale Circuit Court has remanded Gborgbortsi into police custody for defrauding by false pretense. He is set to reappear in court on April 28, 2025.
