President John Dramani Mahama has set Easter next year as the target for the commissioning and handover of the first batch of houses at the Saglemi Housing Project.
The President said the first phase of the project, comprising 1,500 housing units, is expected to be completed by December next year, after which work will begin on the remaining 3,500 units.
“It is my hope that we’ll congregate here after Christmas, just around the Easter, to commission the first set of houses and hand them over,” President Mahama said.
He added, “And then after that, at the end of the year in December, we’ll come again to finish the rest of the 1,500.”
The Saglemi Housing Project was originally conceptualised as a 5,000-unit residential estate, with the first phase comprising 1,500 units.
The President said government expects the first phase to be delivered by December next year, with work on the additional 3,500 housing units commencing thereafter.
“If you remember, this was conceptualised as a residential estate with 5,000 housing units. The first stage was 1,500. And so we’re sure that by December next year, that first phase of 1,500 would have been delivered. And then work would have started on the extra 3,500 housing units,” he said.
President Mahama also linked the Saglemi project to government’s broader New City concept, which he said would stretch through Bundase towards the water lake and incorporate major industrial and residential developments.
“This is going to be a very major industrial and residential corridor,” he said.
“But the good thing is, it ties into the new city concept that we are talking about.”
He further noted that the Dawa Industrial Park would also form part of the broader development corridor, saying, “Saglemi fits into it very nicely. The Dawa Industrial Park fits into it very nicely.”
