President John Dramani Mahama has disclosed plans for a major housing programme as government prepares to roll out the first phase of its District Housing Scheme in selected districts.
The President said the initiative is part of a broader housing vision that the government intends to implement over the next four years, with the Works and Housing Ministry already working on the scheme.
He made the disclosure during a tour of the housing development site, where he outlined government’s plans to expand access to affordable housing across the country.
“Looking forward to this, this is not going to be the last. We have a big housing programme coming out and it will be announced by the Finance Minister in the new budget,” President Mahama said.
According to him, GH¢500 million has already been allocated in the 2026 Budget to support the District Housing Scheme.
“Already the Works and Housing Ministry is working on the district housing scheme. The Finance Minister provided 500 million CDs in this year’s budget,” he said.
The President explained that the allocation would enable government to begin construction of district houses in selected parts of the country this year.
“And so this year they will start rolling out some of those district houses in selected districts,” he added.
He said the scheme would form part of a new approach to addressing Ghana’s housing needs, particularly by expanding access to affordable homes beyond major urban centres.
“And there again, it will be the beginning of a new housing vision that this government wants to roll out over the next four years,” he said.
The announcement comes as government continues efforts to revive stalled housing projects and expand the supply of affordable accommodation across the country.
The District Housing Scheme is expected to complement these efforts by supporting housing development at the district level.
