Four people have been arrested following a joint security operation that led to the interception of 118 bags of cocoa beans weighing 11,800 kilogrammes at Bunkpurugu in the North East Region.
The cocoa, according to the Ghana Police Service, was allegedly being transported towards neighbouring Togo through the Bunkpurugu-Togo border.
The interception took place on August 9, 2026, after the Police received information about a Hyundai Rhino truck, registration number AS-3272-25, which was carrying plantain and cocoa under suspicious circumstances.
A Police patrol team subsequently intercepted the vehicle at the Bunkpurugu Police Snap Check Point and arrested the four occupants.
The suspects have been identified as Dickson Asante, 35, the driver; Gideon Tab, 19, the mate; Mohammed Mumin, 22; and Ernestina Akugre, 23, who claimed ownership of the consignment.
Following the interception, a joint team comprising personnel from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence, GRA Customs Division and National Security searched the truck at the Customs Office.
The search revealed that the plantain was allegedly being used as a decoy to conceal the cocoa beans.
The four suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations.
They are expected to be put before court to face the full rigours of the law, according to the Police.
