Some residents of Ashaiman Middle East, particularly those living along Dr. Kudragbo Street, are calling on the government and relevant authorities to intervene and halt an ongoing building development they say is worsening flooding in the area.
According to the residents, the community did not experience flooding on its current scale until construction began on the disputed site.
They allege that the developer has constructed a fence wall around the property, which they claim has blocked a natural waterway and restricted the free flow of stormwater into the drainage system.
The residents say the alleged obstruction has caused floodwaters to be diverted into nearby homes, destroying properties and creating significant hardship whenever it rains.
They further allege that the portion of land on which the development is taking place was originally earmarked for a road but was later sold to the developer.
The residents claim officials of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly have previously written directives on the developer’s fence wall ordering a halt to construction.
However, they allege that work on the project has continued despite those directives.
They also say they have petitioned the relevant authorities on several occasions to address the situation, but their concerns have yet to receive the desired response.
Speaking on behalf of the affected residents, Mr. Divine Duho, spokesperson for the group, alleged that some officials may have been compromised, which he believes could be contributing to the continued development despite complaints from residents.
He is therefore appealing to the appropriate authorities to urgently investigate the matter, address the alleged obstruction of the waterway, and take steps to prevent further flooding and destruction of property in the community.
The residents say they fear that without immediate intervention, further rainfall could result in more homes being flooded and additional properties being destroyed.
