SSNIT admits securing National Security intervention to remove unauthorised occupants from Labadi, La Palm beachfronts

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has admitted seeking the intervention of the National Security Council Secretariat to address what it describes as persistent unlawful occupation, encroachment and unauthorised activities along the beachfront adjoining the Labadi Beach Hotel and La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

In a statement dated October 2, 2026, SSNIT said the two hotels form part of its investment portfolio and constitute significant national hospitality and tourism assets.

The Trust said it has a fiduciary responsibility to protect the investments, preserve their value and ensure they continue to generate sustainable returns for contributors and pensioners under the Basic National Social Security Scheme.

“These assets belong to the workers and pensioners of Ghana,” SSNIT stressed.

According to the Trust, the continued encroachment along the beachfront posed several risks to the hotels and their operations.

These included threats to the safety and security of hotel guests, employees, service providers and visitors, as well as unauthorised access to sensitive guest and operational areas.

SSNIT also cited increased exposure to fire, sanitation, environmental and public-health hazards, as well as the deterioration of the beachfront, privacy and service standards expected of internationally recognised hospitality facilities.

The Trust further expressed concern about the degradation of the coastal ecosystem allegedly resulting from construction activities on the beachfront and beach sand.

It said the situation also had the potential to damage the reputation of the hotels, SSNIT and Ghana’s tourism industry.

According to SSNIT, the encroachments had disrupted hotel operations and the guest beach experience, with possible consequences for patronage, revenue and the overall financial performance of the facilities.

The Trust also warned that continued expansion of the encroachments could make the recovery of affected lands increasingly difficult and costly.

“In view of the foregoing, SSNIT requested support from National Security to protect the assets belonging to Ghanaian workers,” the statement said.

SSNIT said the beachfronts would subsequently be cleaned and restored to a safe and desirable state.

It assured the public that the beaches would remain open to the public after the exercise.

The statement was issued by the Board of Trustees of SSNIT on October 2, 2026.
