The Supreme Court is expected to deliver judgment today in four constitutional cases challenging the processes that led to the suspension and subsequent removal of Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo as Chief Justice.
The cases, which have been consolidated into two main actions, question the legality and constitutional procedures followed in activating Article 146 processes against the former Chief Justice.
The first consolidated case, J1/22/2025, involves Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo as plaintiff against the Attorney-General and members of the Article 146 Committee, alongside J1/20/2025, filed by the Centre for Citizenship, Constitutional and Electoral Systems LBG.
The second consolidated matter combines J1/18/2025, filed by Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, and J1/21/2025, filed by Theodore Kofi Atta Quartey.
The seven-member panel hearing the matter is presided over by Justice Amadu Tanko, with Justices Emmanuel Yonny Kulendi, Henry Anthony Kwofie, Senyo Dzamefe, Sir Dominic Denis Adjei, Hafisata Amaleboba, and Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo also sitting.
The judgment is expected to provide clarity on constitutional interpretations surrounding judicial removal procedures under Article 146, a matter that has generated significant public and legal interest.
