Tension flared at Kokompe in the Darkuman area of Greater Accra Region after individuals alleged to be part of the convoy of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, reportedly damaged several vehicles and commercial properties while attempting to pass through a road where funeral rites were underway.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred as members of the Kokompe community were observing the funeral of a deceased colleague, during which mourners had gathered along the street in line with local customs.

One witness told the media that the road was partially occupied as mourners paid their final respects, while an ambulance was also attempting to pass through the area.

“A Kokompe member had died, and as part of the tradition, glasses were being smashed on the road.

An ambulance was also passing through, and people were paying their last respects to their deceased colleague,” the eyewitness recounted.

The witness said the convoy of the National Chief Imam arrived at the scene during the funeral activities, but those participating in the ceremony appeared unaware of its approach, resulting in a temporary delay.

According to the eyewitness, shortly afterwards, a group of individuals believed to be accompanying the convoy allegedly began smashing the windscreens of parked private and commercial vehicles.

“That was when we saw some Zongo boys come and start smashing the windscreens of customers’ vehicles,” the witness alleged.

Residents further claimed that some nearby businesses also sustained damage during the incident.

Another eyewitness alleged that members of the convoy justified their actions by claiming that someone had thrown a stone at one of their vehicles.

The circumstances surrounding the incident have not been independently verified, and neither the Office of the National Chief Imam nor the Ghana Police Service has issued an official statement on the matter.
