Russia has pledged to rally support among founding members of BRICS for Ghana’s application to join the bloc as a partner country, Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed.
According to Ablakwa, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced Moscow’s support for Ghana’s application during a breakfast meeting with African foreign ministers on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
He said Mr Lavrov had also promised to engage other founding members of BRICS to secure a consensus in support of Ghana’s bid.
In a statement sharing details of the meeting, Ablakwa said, “Russian Foreign Minister, His Excellency Sergey Lavrov has announced at a breakfast meeting with African Foreign Ministers today that Russia strongly supports Ghana’s application to join BRICS as a partner country.”

“Lavrov further pledged to rally all founding BRICS members to ensure consensus support for Ghana,” he added.
The Foreign Affairs Minister expressed Ghana’s appreciation to the Russian diplomat for the backing, describing him as a respected colleague and close friend.
“I convey Ghana’s deep appreciation to my revered colleague and great friend,” Mr Ablakwa stated.
The engagement formed part of strategic meetings between the Russian Foreign Minister and his African counterparts at the ongoing Russia-Africa Summit.
Ghana’s interest in joining BRICS as a partner country reflects the government’s efforts to broaden its international partnerships and explore alternative avenues for economic cooperation and development.
Ablakwa said the Mahama administration remained committed to Ghana’s longstanding foreign policy of non-alignment as it pursued opportunities in the country’s national interest.
“The Mahama Administration will continue to uphold Ghana’s longstanding foreign policy of non-alignment and friends of all, enemies to none as we pursue diversified development options in our national interest,” he said.
He concluded his statement with the national expression of commitment, “For God and Country.”
