The Agyeman-Rawlings family on Tuesday morning paid a condolence visit to the family of the late James Victor Gbeho, former Minister for Foreign Affairs, following his passing on Sunday.
The delegation, led by Oheneba Akwasi Abayie, Otumfuo’s Akomforehene, and Colonel Joshua Agbotui, Head of the Agbotui family, called on the bereaved family to express their sympathy and support during the period of mourning.
The visit brought together members of the extended Gbeho family, including children and relatives of the late diplomat, as well as prominent figures such as former Attorney-General and Foreign Minister Obed Yao Asamoah.
Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle and daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, paid tribute to the late diplomat, describing him as a longstanding family friend whose relationship with the Agyeman-Rawlings family spanned many years.
She noted that the bond between the two families remained strong beyond the passing of former President Rawlings and continued through subsequent years, describing Ambassador Gbeho as someone deeply connected to the family’s history and legacy.
Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings assured the Gbeho family of their full support as they prepare a fitting farewell for the late statesman, adding that the family stood ready to assist in any way possible during the mourning period.
Other members of the delegation, including Ms. Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, Ms. Amina Agyeman-Rawlings, Mr. Kimathi Agyeman-Rawlings, former Information Minister Fritz Baffour, Brigadier General Benjamin Kusi (rtd), Agya Yaw Mainoo, and Madam Sylvia Ahorlu, also paid tribute to the late diplomat.
Responding on behalf of the family, Madam Kiki Gbeho, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for South Sudan and Head of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), expressed gratitude for the visit and support shown by the Agyeman-Rawlings family.
She described her father as a consummate diplomat who served Ghana and the international community with distinction, noting that his experience and wisdom were especially evident in the way he handled every situation.
Madam Gbeho added that her father’s legacy extended beyond Ghana and West Africa, touching lives across the global diplomatic landscape, and said he would be deeply missed.
James Victor Gbeho served as Ghana’s Foreign Minister from 1997 to 2001 and was Member of Parliament for Anlo from 2001 to 2005.
A career diplomat, he represented Ghana in several countries including China, India, Nigeria, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, and was appointed in 1994 as the United Nations Special Representative to Somalia.
He later served as President of the ECOWAS Commission from 2010 to 2012.
