Twelve people have died and several others sustained injuries after a seven-vehicle crash along the John Teye-Ofankor corridor on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The crash involved two heavily loaded tipper trucks, two passenger Sprinter buses, two private saloon cars and a tricycle, according to the National Road Safety Authority (NRA).

In a statement, the Authority expressed concern over the fatal incident and said the victims had been conveyed to the Ga North Municipal Hospital and Achimota Hospital for medical attention.

“The National Road Safety Authority (NRA) is deeply saddened by the tragic crash that occurred on Thursday, 13th August 2026, along the John Teye-Ofankor corridor. This devastating accident claimed twelve lives and left several others injured.”

The NRA said it is working with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service and other stakeholders to manage traffic and restore order along the affected corridor.

The Authority described the incident as a reminder of the need for greater caution and compliance with road safety regulations, particularly amid what it says is a rising trend of fatal crashes across the country.

“The NRA has observed with concern the rising trend of fatal crashes across the country and is intensifying its public education and enforcement efforts to curb this menace.”

It reminded motorists of the statutory speed limits, which are 90 km/h on highways, 50 km/h in urban settlements and 30 km/h in built-up areas.

The NRA also urged vehicle owners and operators to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling, citing mechanical failures and excessive speeding as major contributors to road crashes.

“Mechanical failures, when combined with excessive speeding, continue to be major causes of crashes, and regular maintenance checks are essential to prevent avoidable tragedies.”

The Authority extended condolences to the families of those who died and to the transport associations affected by the crash, while wishing the injured a full and speedy recovery.

As investigations and traffic management efforts continue, the NRA has called on motorists and other road users to exercise vigilance and adhere to road safety regulations.
