The Ministry of Education has directed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (Ghana Tertiary Education Commission) to withdraw earlier letters concerning post-retirement contracts for academic senior members in public universities.
In a statement issued on April 27, 2026, the Ministry said the directive follows engagements with key stakeholders, including the University Teachers Association of Ghana (University Teachers Association of Ghana).
The Ministry specifically instructed that GTEC “immediately withdraw its letters dated September 30 and October 1, 2025, concerning the post-retirement contracts of Academic Senior Members of public universities.”
According to the statement, the decision was reached after a meeting between the Education Minister and UTAG leadership, aimed at addressing concerns raised within the tertiary education sector.
It further explained that the move is intended to allow broader consultations before any final policy direction is taken.
“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the Ministry noted.
The Ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to a transparent and inclusive approach in managing issues affecting higher education.
