The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has acknowledged a technical fault affecting a limited batch of its 2026 embossed number plates, following routine quality checks that exposed durability concerns.
The Authority explained that some plates issued had begun to fade, indicating they did not meet expected production standards. The affected batch has since been withdrawn from circulation.
In a statement, the Authority said it had taken immediate corrective action and was offering a full replacement exercise for affected vehicle owners.
“All affected vehicle owners are invited to visit any DVLA office nationwide for a free replacement,” the Authority stated.
It added that it regrets the inconvenience caused and has accepted responsibility for the lapse.
“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and take full responsibility for the oversight,” the statement noted.
The DVLA further assured the public that it is strengthening its internal quality assurance systems to prevent similar issues in future and maintain confidence in its vehicle registration services.
