Cabinet has directed the Transport Minister to immediately deploy newly acquired buses and implement reduced fares on selected routes as part of urgent measures to ease transport costs for commuters.
Ghana, on Saturday, April 4, received 100 new 29-seater buses to help ease transport congestion across the country, as part of a broader plan to address recent challenges in the sector.
Speaking after an emergency Cabinet meeting on rising fuel prices, Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said the intervention is aimed at reducing pressure on citizens affected by recent fuel price increases.
He explained that the Transport Minister has been tasked to ensure the swift rollout of the buses, especially on busy urban and intercity routes where demand is highest.
As part of the directive, Cabinet has also instructed that fares on the state-run buses must remain lower than those charged by private transport operators to provide immediate relief to commuters.
The government says the deployment of the buses will be scaled up in phases as additional units arrive in the coming months, strengthening efforts to stabilise the public transport system nationwide.
